How in Shape do I Need to be?

You do not need to be a champion by any means, and we will make sure you are accomodated at any level. However, you will get the most out of camp if you are in some kind of cardiovascular shape. For beginners, we recommend that you can jog or do some type of cardio comfortably for 30 minutes. The best way to prepare for class is to ride your bike for one to two hours a few times a week for a few weeks if possible.

We do lots of skill building (not cardio), and stopping and talking on trail, but going up hill and breathing hard are an unavoidable part of biking. We hope instead of scaring you off that you just start training right now, today. Even if you don't come to camp you'll be happier and feel better!

Clipless Pedals
(when your bike shoes are clipped to the pedals)

Learning to use clipless pedals can vastly improve your riding by improving your pedal power (you move the bike on the upstroke, not just by pushing down) and you don’t bounce off the pedals on downhills or technical sections.  If you have been wanting to learn to use them, we will happily help you during SheRide. It can be challenging to learn all the new skills, and how to use your pedals at the same time, however, so we suggest one of three things:

1) practice clicking in and out and using the pedals in your front yard until you are at least somewhat comfortable before camp;

2) Come with your flat pedals or toe cages (whatever you use now) and postpone using clipless until after camp;

3) Change to clipless, but bring your flat pedals too (just in case) so you can switch back to them during camp if it feels like too much new learning all at one time.
